The Asus Eee Pad Transformer prime is a relatively new tablet on the market, mostly known for its ability to “transform” from tablet to netbook with a keyboard dock. It features 18hours of battery life, which is 8 more hours of fun than you get with an ipad. Also it has a quad core tegra, which certainly makes it the fastest tablet on the market. But Asus has received a lot of critic over the past few weeks mainly due to GPS issues and the fact that the bootloader is locked (aka no custom roms). Apparently the GPS issues are due to the fact that the antenna tries to receive signals through a metal plating, which is impossible. And even though the ipad for example is also covered in metal it has plastic openings for signals to pass through. There has been an update to fix this problem but since its a design flaw it can only be tweaked — not fixed by updates.
Our friends at Chipworks have made an elaborate teardown, so check that out below. Click on an image to enlarge it and there will be a description on every image!
Meanwhile they are still doing some lab work to produce die photos including a backside poly of the Tegra 3 so you can see the full die layout, so keep your eyes open for more!
Apple has just made its second-generation iPad official! It features a 1GHz dual-core A5 chip and, finally, cameras, both on the front and rear. The new CPU is said to be up to twice as fast, with graphics performance up to nine times better than on the original iPad, while power requirements have been kept the same. Battery life is, consequently, unaltered, with Apple promising 10 hours. Pricing, too, has been left unchanged, starting at $499 for a 16GB WiFi-only iPad 2 and stretching up to $829 for a WiFi + 3G SKU with 64GB of storage. But what’s funny is the new smart covers that basically are like the ipad case for the first ipad, but only half of it and you connect it to the side of the ipad to form a clamshell like cover. Also it is a third thinner than the first one. Also it has a gyro aswell as support for both verizon and at&t networks. (more…)
According to a filing that just popped up in the FCC’s database, the H1000B tablet will eventually hit the US market with 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and a copy of Windows 7, and we’re also hearing that an SD card reader is likely around the edges. The downward sloping front makes us wonder if this thing isn’t cut out for some sort of dock, but it’s not like a peripheral port is jumping out at us, either. Our bets are on a CES 2011.
Today’s the day that the iPad makes itsdebut at Verizon. Whether it’s the beginning of better days between the two US giants remains to be seen. As a reminder, Verizon’s offer bundles a MiFi 2200 mobile hotspot with your choice of 16GB ($629), 32GB ($729), or 64GB ($820) iPads and 1GB ($20), 3GB ($35), or 5GB ($50) of data per month without contractual commitment.
They will be selling WiFi + 3G version of the iPad today in 16GB ($629), 32GB ($729), and 64GB ($829) with contract-free data plans for 250MB of data ($14.99) or 2GB of data ($25) per month with free access to AT&T’s 23,000+ domestic WiFi hotspots. AT&T’s also offering international plans ranging from 20MB for $24.99 per month on up to 200MB for a staggering $199.99 per month.
