It took researchers at MIT 6 months to create this AI video of Nixon delivering the speech he would have delivered should the Apollo 11 lunar landing have been a failure.

The speech is a real speech that was written in case of a moon landing disaster.

“Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace,”

The project was created to showcase how disturbingly realistic deepfake videos can be. So as cool this video is to watch for any space exploration enthusiast lets’ be real, it’s not all that convincing.

The speech was read by an actor and then manipulated digitally. And I gotta say it sounds weird, I wouldn’t buy it. However the motions of Nixon which were correlated to the audio using AI is pretty damn good.

“In Event of Moon Disaster is an immersive art project inviting you into an alternative history, asking us all to consider how new technologies can bend, redirect and obfuscate the truth around us,” the project’s website said. “By creating this alternative history the project explores the influence and pervasiveness of misinformation and deepfake technologies in our contemporary society.”
