ACTA Canceled after EU-Parliament vote!

neVmK ACTA Canceled after EU Parliament vote! gadgetzzParliament voted “no” to ACTA. It means this agreement will not enter into force in the EU.

The European Parliament just decided to cancel ACTA! After the final voting the ACTA agreement was downvoted by a large percent of the partiliament. This means that the deceptive treaty is now dead globally.

The EU Parliament has received well over two million signatures to protest the Acta, partly because of fear of freedom on the internet will be limited.

– If we are to have an elected parliament in Europe to represent the citizens, it is really fine that Parliament may take the public’s concerns and opinions into consideration when making their decisions. It’s a very strong day for European democracy, says  Amelia Andersdotter (Pirate Party).

478 people voted against ACTA today. Only 39 voted in favor, while 165 abstained.

Poor countries can continue to get cheap medicine. Our Internet service providers do not need to snoop on their users even more than they have to do now. Linux users can still get to watch DVDs on their computers. Bittorrent does not become illegal. And hopefully you will not let customs agents search the hard drive of your laptop for unlicensed MP3 files. The fact that this happened just on the 4th of july was probably just a coincidence.

ACTA is a controversial trade agreement designed to stop copyright infringement, both in terms of physical piracy and the Internet. Proponents believe that the agreement is an intellectual property protection, and a necessity for the future. While opponents say that it is at the expense of civil liberty and privacy, and that it primarily benefits large companies.

Think the bullshit with SOPA, PIPA and ACTA is over? Nope.  Welcome the new legislation, CISPA to the club of retarded legislations!

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) allows companies to collect information about people and give it to the US government in the name of cyber security. The main problem with the bill is that it is so broad it can even lead to companies and the government monitoring and censoring what people say.

Online activists who helped slow down the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) earlier this year have now turned their sights to a House cybersecurity bill, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA).

A spokesperson for the US based Centre for Democracy and Technology said that what is of major concern is the fact that CISPA is extremely vast in terms of the types of information it will allow the government to receive. She also said that the bill would create a vast hole in all existing privacy laws and could be used as a back door wire tapper of sorts.

Electronic Frontier Foundation says that CISPA uses such sweeping language that it would give companies and the government new powers to monitor and censor communications for copyright infringement. It could also be a powerful weapon to use against whistleblower websites like WikiLeaks. (more…)

ACTA – SOPA & PIPA’s Evil Unstoppable Child!

ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, is a controversial proposal to be negotiated between the EU, U.S., Japan, Switzerland and others. The proposal provides for stringent action against copyright infringement. In other words the exact same thing as SOPA & PIPA, but this thing we cant stop, also it DOES CONCERN EUROPE AND THE REST OF THE WORLD!

Negotiations have taken place in secret, without democratic accountability. The countries involved have admitted that ACTA exists but has refused to disclose what the proposal entails. A human rights activist in Canada who were trying to retrieve documents related to ACTA documents received with only the title and all text censored. Because ACTA is not related to countries’ security, one can only speculate as to why you do it like that. Presumably you understood how unpopular the proposal would be because it is very much affects human freedom, and therefore did not wish that there would be no debate or opposition to it.

A document entitled Discussion Paper on a Possible Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement was sent out to lobbyists from the media industry which was later leaked to Wikileaks. A recent paper entitled ACTA Negotiations brief on Border Measures and Civil Enforcement 2008, a briefing before the ACTA negotiations in late July 2008, leaked also to Wikileaks. Had it not been for these documents leaked so had very little was known about ACTA. The media industry has apparently been involved in ACTA from the beginning. In Canada, for example, the government has gathered a group of media industry to provide advice regarding the ACTA.

From the American side is driven proposal by a small group of Congress members who are all great recipients of the media industry. The ACTA is finished, it is intended that the document is “locked” so that the points is not possible to renegotiate, for example, other countries invited to participate.

After consulting the Nutrition Committee of the Swedish Parliament took place, was declared the participation of professional secrecy.

While citizens of the world withheld information about ACTA, some U.S. companies had access to them, which is criticized by many.

The blogger scaber Nestor has tried to get the Swedish government to release documents on ACTA, with reference to the principle of public access. However, this has failed, the state has invoked a law that says that the discussions on international relations are not subject to open government.

When did the world want to become like North Korea?

FBI Takes down Megaupload, Anonymous strikes back gadgetzz

One of the world’s largest file-sharing sites, megaupload was shut down Thursday, and its founder and several company executives were charged with violating piracy laws, federal prosecutors said.

An indictment accuses Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart online piracy. Megaupload however assures you that over 90% of what they hosted where legitimate, legal files. And Megaupload was actually one of the file sharing sites that actively fought piracy on their site.

How is it that this happens the day after the biggest protest against SOPA and PIPA? (google now counts 7million signatures against sopa)

Hacktivists with the collective Anonymous are waging an attack on the website for the White House after successfully breaking the sites for the FBI, Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, RIAA and Motion Picture Association of America.

In response to today’s federal raid on the file sharing service Megaupload, hackers with the online collective Anonymous have broken the websites for the FBI, Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, RIAA, Motion Picture Association of America and Warner Music Group.

“It was in retaliation for Megaupload, as was the concurrent attack on Justice.org,” Anonymous operative Barrett Brown tells RT on Thursday afternoon.

Only hours before the DoJ and Universal sites went down, news broke that Megaupload, a massive file sharing site with a reported 50 million daily users, was taken down by federal agents. Four people linked to Megaupload were arrested in New Zealand and an international crackdown led agents to serving at least 20 search warrants across the globe.

The latest of sites to fall is FBI.gov, which finally broke at around 7:40 pm EST Thursday evening.
