Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich ported to Kindle Fire

A hacker has ported the latest version of Google’s Android operating system to the Amazon Kindle Fire.

A short demonstration has been posted on Youtube of a Kindle Fire running Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). G1011999, named Stephen, shows off his preliminary results of the port, which bumps the tablet up from Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Not much is shown off because it’s an early stage of the project. Handily the touchscreen works and we’re able to see the home screens, app menu and the ‘about tablet’ information showing the Android version.

Stephen admits that there is still work to do including getting the WiFi and audio operational. He adds that the reason he put Android ICS on the Kindle Fire is because the hardware is good enough but the software is limited.
