Researchers from Switzerland have discovered that using touchscreen devices to type frequently alters the activity in the part of the brains cortex that controls your index finger and thumb.
Essentially that part of the brain lights up on an active MRI. It then fades in activity after a period of not using your touchscreen device. This would suggest that repetitive smartphone use effectively alters your sensory processing, meaning your brain is perceives your fingers in a different way. Which in itself doesn’t say much, we still don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing. But it’s certainly interesting. Previously it was thought that basically only playing certain musical instruments frequently could affect your brain in this manner.
