Apple could earn $10 for every Android device sold

0900 android iphone Apple could earn $10 for every Android device sold gadgetzzWe all know that Apple is on a “thermonuclear war” to destroy Android, and the company has been relentless in pursuit of its goal with all the lawsuits it’s been serving out left and right to Android handset manufacturers globally. While this could get rid of all potential competition for Apple, it might be detrimental to shareholders according to an intellectual property expert, Kevin Rivette.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Rivette believes that Apple could probably collect up to $10 in royalties for every Android device sold – twice the amount that Microsoft makes for each Android phone that HTC sells. Now we all know that probably won’t happen with Apple being unwilling to license its patents, but there’s something to think about. Imagine all the money that Apple could make off its competitors (not that it needs anymore) at the tradeoff of their iOS devices being less “special”.

What do you think? Should Apple license its patents to competitors or should it aim to shut them all down?

The Android developer who raised the ire of a mobile-phone monitoring company last week is on the attack again, producing a video of how the Carrier IQ software secretly installed on millions of mobile phones reports most everything a user does on a phone.

Though the software is installed on most modern Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones, Carrier IQ was virtually unknown until 25-year-old Trevor Eckhart of Connecticut analyzed its workings, revealing that the software secretly chronicles a user’s phone experience — ostensibly so carriers and phone manufacturers can do quality control.

But now he’s released a video actually showing the logging of text messages, encrypted web searches and, well, you name it.

Eckhart labeled the software a “rootkit,” and the Mountain View, California-based software maker threatened him with legal action and huge money damages. The Electronic Frontier Foundation came to his side last week, and the company backed off on its threats. The company told Wired.com last week that Carrier IQ’s wares are for “gathering information off the handset to understand the mobile-user experience, where phone calls are dropped, where signal quality is poor, why applications crash and battery life.”

The company denies its software logs keystrokes. Eckhart’s 17-minute video clearly undercuts that claim.

Could be funny. (more…)

Iphone 4 loses it’s precious Face Time

saudi iphone1 Iphone 4 loses its precious Face Time gadgetzz
Iphone4 launched this weekend in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, but buyers wound up with a surprise — their handset’s front-facing cameras couldn’t do Face TimeThe National reports that the video chat feature is missing from phones sold at UAE carriers Etisalat and du, as well as those from Vodafone Qatar. Carriers are blaming Apple for the missing feature, and spokespersons from both Etisalat and Vodafone say they’re speaking to Cupertino about reinstating FaceTime post-haste, which was reportedly advertised on Middle Eastern versions of Apple’s iPhone website until around September 20th, when all references to FaceTime were removed. TUAW reports that some UAE denizens have actually tested FaceTime on phones bought abroad and found it working just fine, but that the functionality disappears after installing the local version of the iOS 4.1 update. Either way, that pic is creepy!
