ron paul revolution 239x300 Ron Paul expresses dislike for CISPA, encourages you to protest it. gadgetzzCongressman Ron Paul one of the presidential runners recently spoke to a group of around 2000 people at a San Diego University where he showed his distaste for government censorship of the internet.

Congressman Paul began an address attended by an estimated 2,000 people on Friday by discussing the importance of the US Constitution’s First Amendment. “Without the First Amendment it is very difficult for us to get our message out,” said Paul, “but I want to make sure that the first amendment is protected on the Internet as well.”

The congressman’s call to stop online censorship was met with a rousing round of applause.

“Every once in a while there will be a court case and there will be some controversial language involved and the courts are supposed to decide, is it constitutional to say these controversial things? Well let me tell you, the First Amendment wasn’t written so that you can talk about the weather,” said Rep. Paul. “It was written so that you can talk about controversial things and even challenge our own government.”

Think the bullshit with SOPA, PIPA and ACTA is over? Nope.  Welcome the new legislation, CISPA to the club of retarded legislations!

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) allows companies to collect information about people and give it to the US government in the name of cyber security. The main problem with the bill is that it is so broad it can even lead to companies and the government monitoring and censoring what people say.

Online activists who helped slow down the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) earlier this year have now turned their sights to a House cybersecurity bill, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA).

A spokesperson for the US based Centre for Democracy and Technology said that what is of major concern is the fact that CISPA is extremely vast in terms of the types of information it will allow the government to receive. She also said that the bill would create a vast hole in all existing privacy laws and could be used as a back door wire tapper of sorts.

Electronic Frontier Foundation says that CISPA uses such sweeping language that it would give companies and the government new powers to monitor and censor communications for copyright infringement. It could also be a powerful weapon to use against whistleblower websites like WikiLeaks. (more…)

T-Mobile and KPN argue that blocking websites is a threat to the open Internet, and suggest that the entertainment industry focuses on new business models instead. BREIN is now expected to take the ISPs to court.

Two weeks ago, the Court of The Hague ruled that Ziggo, the largest ISP in the Netherlands, and competitor XS4ALL have to block access to The Pirate Bay. (more…)

EU domstol469 203985b Congressional SOPA hearings: no opponents of the bill allowed gadgetzzAs the House of Representatives opens hearings on SOPA, the worst piece of Internet legislation in American history, it has rejected all submissions and testimony from public interest groups and others who oppose the bill.

Irony Alert: The House is holding hearings on sweeping Internet censorship legislation this week — and it’s censoring the opposition! The bill is backed by Hollywood, Big Pharma, and the Chamber of Commerce, and all of them are going to get to testify at the hearing.

But the bill’s opponents — tech companies, free speech and human rights activists, and hundreds of thousands of Internet users — won’t have a voice.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt just came out swinging against PROTECT IP, saying, “I would be very, very careful if I were a government about arbitrarily [implementing] simple solutions to complex problems.” And then he went even further. From the LA Times:

“If there is a law that requires DNSs, to do X and it’s passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the president of the United States and we disagree with it then we would still fight it,” he said, according to the report. “If it’s a request the answer is we wouldn’t do it, if it’s a discussion we wouldn’t do it.”

Big content is irate. The Motion Picture Association of America released a statement saying, “We’ve heard this ‘but the law doesn’t apply to me’ argument before – but usually, it comes from content thieves, not a Fortune 500 company. Google should know better.”
