Self-Guiding bullet prototyped by US Weapons Experts

Prototype with a LED attached to it

How does a self steering bullet sound? This might soon be the future..

The bullet uses tiny fins to correct the course of its flight allowing it to hit laser-illuminated targets.

It is designed to be capable of hitting objects at distances of about 2km (1.24 miles). Work on a prototype suggests that accuracy is best at longer ranges.

The team has carried out both field tests and computer simulations, and says “engineering issues” remain. However, they add that they are confident of bringing the product to market. (more…)

Asus Transformer Prime Teardown

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer prime is a relatively new tablet on the market, mostly known for its ability to “transform” from tablet to netbook with a keyboard dock.  It features 18hours of battery life, which is 8 more hours of fun than you get with an ipad. Also it has a quad core tegra, which certainly makes it the fastest tablet on the market. But Asus has received a lot of critic over the past few weeks mainly due to GPS issues and the fact that the bootloader is locked (aka no custom roms). Apparently the GPS issues are due to the fact that the antenna tries to receive signals through a metal plating, which is impossible. And even though the ipad for example is also covered in metal it has plastic openings for signals to pass through. There has been an update to fix this problem but since its a design flaw it can only be tweaked — not fixed by updates.

Our friends at Chipworks have made an elaborate teardown, so check that out below. Click on an image to enlarge it and there will be a description on every image!

Meanwhile they are still doing some lab work to produce die photos including a backside poly of the Tegra 3 so you can see the full die layout, so keep your eyes open for more!

Facebook kept 1222 pages of personal data over three years

Austrian student Max Schrems sits with 1222 pages worth of his personal data that Facebook provided to him.

Max Schrems wasn’t sure what he would get when he asked Facebook to send him a record of his personal data from three years of using the site.

What the 24-year-old Austrian law student didn’t expect, though, was 1222 pages of data on a CD. It included chats he had deleted more than a year ago, “pokes” dating back to 2008, invitations to which he had never responded, let alone attended, and hundreds of other details.
As you have probably heard there is a lot of talk about whether or not face-book deletes private files or “soft deleted conversations”, apparently they don’t. What’s you opinion on this?
