The future of storage, set to kill SSD’s, ReRAM

hp reram The future of storage, set to kill SSDs, ReRAM gadgetzzWhat if you could combine the RAM and hard-drive onto the same storage unit without it losing its memory when the power breaks? It would in theory mean close to no loading times as you would already have everything in your RAM. But wouldn’t it be slow? Apparently it would be up to 3X faster than todays standard SSD harddisks.
ReRAM has actually been in development for a while, but is really hard to manufacture. However now it looks like we might actually see it in consumer computers in our lifetime!

The principle of the ‘memrister‘, upon which ReRAM is based, has been around for 40 years. Memristers work by ‘remembering’ the amount and polarity of current that passes through them as electrical resistance, which enables them to store data in ReRAM. HP believes that memristers have other potential uses as logic gates and switches that “could one day, for example, act like synapses inside computer circuits, mimicking the behavior of neurons in the human brain”.

So who is working to commericialise ReRAM? Companies include include SanDisk, Sony, Panasonic, Micron, Hynix, DSI and more. Image ReRAM 1 The future of storage, set to kill SSDs, ReRAM gadgetzz

notifikationsfalt android ios5 patent Apple did steal their notification system from Android, Google might have it patented! gadgetzz

The drag down notification field has always been one of Android’s top characteristics. This feature was actually designed by Swedish design studio TAT which later was acquired by Canadian RIM (Research In Motion), located behind the BlackBerry mobile phones.

Many android users have probably wondered why it is that Apple apparently copied Android’s notification system with the introduction iOS5. The two notification systems are so similar that some wondered if Apple actually paid money for the license to use the function or if Apple were encroaching on Google’s patents. I myself thought it was a very lame move from Apples side.

Now it appears that Google filed for a patent for their notification system as early as 2009. Things can move slowly in the world of patents and the application has not be granted yet.

If Google’s patent for the function is granted it would, in theory mean trouble for Apple. Eventually, the patent can then be used to balance out all the lawsuits on Android.

Apparently the Iphone 4S was the worst and died first!

frozen iphone 3g [TEST] Which phone is the best in cold climates? gadgetzzThe swedish magazine MikroPC has made a test where they  exposed a number of popular mobile devices for cold torture to see which one could stand it the best.

The test was conducted in the Finnish Technical Research Centers weatherroom. The starting temperature was zero degrees and then the temperature was decreased stepwise until the units simply died a bitter cold death. .

What was the result? Apple’s latest mobile iPhone 4S is apparently no good at all to use outdoors this time of year, because the device with the Nokia N9 at -5 degrees celsius, began to show errors in the SIM card and battery. iPhone 4S then completely died at -10 degrees, compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 4, which dealt with -20. At minus ten degrees all LCDs started to have problems while AMOLED screens where far  much better.

The devices that could withstand cold very best where the old phones Nokia C1-01 and Nokia E65, which held out to the entire -40 degrees. Samsung Galaxy S2 was also tough and survived -35 degrees, while the HTC Evo 3D had troubles at -20.
